Abstract

Modern research on the history of Neapolis-Neoldaudiopolis (Vezirköprü, Samsun province) began with its coins. In the nineteenth century, the focus of research shifted from the coins of Neoldaudiopolis to the physical remains of the city, especially its inscriptions. The combined findings of J.G.C. Anderson, Franz and Eugene Cumont and Henri Gregoire were published in the three-volume Studia Pontica (Brussels, 1903-1910) which a hundred years later remain essential reading for anyone studying the history of ancient Vezirköprü. From the 1980s onwards, a resurgence of research interest in Pontos has taken place, especially within archaeology and epigraphy.
